My Background

I was a FE Lecturer for 18 years where my role (for some of the time) was to develop education programmes for community organisations including tenants groups.

I managed international projects with a women's group in Moscow, Solidarity in Poland and a community education project in South India.

I have been self-employed working mainly with Third Sector organisations since 1999. This has involved working with voluntary & community groups and social enterprises on organisational development, training, business planning, preparing funding applications and project management.

Social Accounting and Audit Experience

I trained as a social auditor in 2005-2006 and have chaired a number of audit panels and delivered a number of Prove Improve and Account (PIA) workshops (formerly Master Classes) in the East and West Midlands and London. I mentored two prospective panel chairs in September and October 2011.

As an active member of SAN in the Midlands I regularly participate in local and regional social impact and accounting awareness events to promote social accounting and audit and other forms of impact measurement. I regularly attend SAN professional development events and have recently (May 2011) undertaken the new SAN PIA Guide training.

I use social accounting with voluntary/community groups and social enterprises as a framework for identifying what they do and for structuring their work to meet their vision and objectives. It is a very useful way for Third Sector organisations to understand why and how they do what they do and planning their work whether or not they prepare full social accounts for audit.
