Social Accounting Experience

From 2003 to 2008 I was employed by Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council. Train 2000 staff Lisa McMullan and Helen Milne taught 10 Humber & Wolds staff and volunteers, including myself, the Social Accounting and Audit NVQ . Then I took 24 community development colleagues through the same 14 day course. During this time I helped to prepare the following 12 social accounts:

Two sets for the Rural SEA Project, two for Humber & Wolds RCC, one each for the European Funded Community Development Project, the Pathfinder Community Apprenticeship Scheme, the local Rural Social Development funded projects, Goole Gateway Resource Centre, the National Rural Youth Network and the Goole, Hornsea and Beverley Community Transport Schemes

To become an auditor I was trained by Alan Kay and Helen Vines, mentored chairing a panel in Glasgow by John Pearce and when qualified chaired a panel in Birmingham. I became a regional co-ordinator for SAN and ran introductory workshops for community organisations in Hull, also at the annual conferences of ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England), the Community Transport Association (CTA), the organisation supporting Boards of Housing Associations and another group interested in impact measurement based in Leeds, as well as at annual SAN gatherings. I have taught on SAN Masterclasses in York and Cambridge and undertaken the refresher course based on the New Guide so I able to deliver the new P.I.A.course for other trainers.

In 2011 I retired from full-time work and so was able to support two organisations in Sheffield to prepare their first sets of social accounts. I also delivered another introductory workshop which should lead to more organisations undertaking social accounting in the Yorkshire & Humber Region. I am currently a member of the Board of Directors and honorary Company Secretary of SAN.
